How To Identify Pigskin

|

Being as a Muslim we already know that wearing a pigskin and trace of it is forbidden. This is because pigskin remain filthy or Najis even after tanning.

Surprisingly many Muslim nowdays do not know whether they are wearing product that made from pigskin.

Last Sunday I went to the city for a small assignment. Finding a leather product that uses pigskin. Identifying them was not as easy as we thought. Pigskin were used in most of leather product and famous as a lining material for shoes, wallet, bags and even briefcases.

How to recognized it? (source from sunnipath)

Mostly, it looks like suede. But it is thinner. It has spots on it. Kind of depressions or little holes that never go through. It seems like some has used spikes to try to pin through it. But these spots are only on one side.

Usually, on the other side of the leather, you will see squeezed round shaped spots. These spots may not be very prominent on this side. If you look very closely at the pictures given, you will have no problem in identifying pigskin. If you are not sure, read labels or ask the store keepers. Do not ask them if these are pigskins. Let them tell you what kind of leather it is. Do not take their words - Ask for proof.

Hard to Recognize

Hardest is to recognize the pigskin that is being used for non-suede type leather products. But with a close examination spots and holes can be detected. This type of leather needs much concentration.

I found few items that actually use pigskin and some of them hardly can be identified.

lining of briefcases, leather folder
This briefcase lining was made from pigskin. It is difficult to identify because the spot and pin hole like dots is not visible. You need to examine closely to see the spot. Why this particular leather is difficult to identify? Because it has be re-textured.

pigskin as a lining for bags
The suede and thin pigskin leather. Usually use as a lining for bags. This can be easily identified because the prominent dots.

pigskin as an inside lining for shoes
This shoe lining looks like it is made from calf skin and it is difficult to know whether it was made from pigskin or not. To examine this type of leather is by stretching the inner layer outwards and see the result on the last photo.

shoe lining
By stretching the leather outwards the prominent pigskin dots clearly visible. Make sure you wear a glove before doing this.

i've doubt about this issues since i'm a muslim. i just found out that the shoes that i bought from the internet has this dots which kindda of confusing. i dunno whether it's a pig skin skin when examine the shoes, the dots not really in triangular shape, more toward straight line. some of the line has 3-dot but when i look closely, some of them has 4 or more dots. what is you opinion about my dilemma?

sw33t-bLuebeary: hi there.. the dot is actually quite obvious and can be easily been seen with naked eye. It doesn't have to be 3 dots sometimes. Other type of skin usually does not have distinctive dots, as only pig skin have that.

Some shoes will have part of the lining with pig skin mixed with probably synthetic or even other leather. Usually the part that pig skin widely use is sole, upper sole, and the backside.

Just be careful when buying leather goods from internet as it is difficult to inspect.

u can simply find the pig skin lining in Steve Madden and Nose women's shoes.. be careful. *sigh: there's no sign telling us that is pig skin or not until i realized and has been identified by myself. But Topshop do have the sign telling that their shoes is made from pig skin.

sw33t-bLu3b3ary: I think if you are not aware about it then I guess it is dimaafkan.. but to be safe just do the samak.

anonympus: Yes Steve Madden, Julius Marlow, even branded shoes like Gucci, Polo Ralph Lauren etc... I think what we really need is cautious. And recently I found out that they use the pig skin as a shoe lining but in reversed. So basically you won't be able to spot the 3 dots.
